As discusssed in another entry, most of my “reading” is done electronically on my iPod.
Currently I am listening to Dune: The Butlerian Jihad by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson. Brian is Frank Herbert’s son – the author of the “original’ Dune series (Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse Dune).
Brian and Kevin have written 3 other prequel stories – House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and House Corrino. these all take place in the years right before Dune.
Their latest, Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, focus on an event that is mentioned many times in the Dune stories. This takes place thousand of years before the Dune stories. It sets up many of the things we are very familiar with in the Dune universe – the Bene Gesserit, the Spacing Guild, and spice among a few of them. It explains why the Harkonnens are arch-enemies of the Atredies and why humanity does not use thinking machines. It has been a great story so far – I still have about 6 hours to go.
